Testing two different metronidazole treatment schedule for trichomoniasis

Trichomoniasis is the most common non-viral sexually transmitted infection, and Metronidazole is the preferred treatment for trichomoniasis. However, there is a lack of consensus on what is the most appropriate dose. Thus, the National Institute of Health sponsored a study to compare the effectiveness between the one day high-dose vs. the 7-day-dose of Metronidazole in treating trichomoniasis.
The study included 323 women whose infection with Trichomonas vaginalis was confirmed either with identification culture or nucleic acid identification. These patients were randomly assigned to receive one 2 gram tablet of metronidazole or one 500 mg tablet of metronidazole twice daily for 7 days. Screening was then conducted 4 weeks after treatment had been finished to determine the presence of the pathogen. Clearance of Trichomonas vaginalis happened in 11% of those in the single dose group, and 19% in the multidose group. Thus, the study concluded that one 500 mg tablet of metronidazole twice daily for 7 days is more effective at treating trichomoniasis than one 2 gram tablet of metronidazole. There was little difference in adverse effects between the two treatment groups. The most common side effects include nausea, headache and vomiting.
