Retinoid, a derivative of vitamin A, is a first-line treatment for acne lesions by preventing keratinocyte proliferation and differentiation. There are many types of medication in the retinoid class; each targets a few specific subtypes of retinoid receptors and have their own tolerability profile. A recent review article had recently published their findings on the efficacy and safety of Tazarotene, a retinoid that targets 2 of the 6 receptors.

In the 2 phase III clinical trials included in this review, a combined of 1,614 participants with moderate-to-severe acne vulgaris was randomly assigned to receive either a daily topical treatment with tazarotene 0.045% lotion or placebo for 12 weeks. The lotion is very effective at reducing the number of inflammatory and non-inflammatory lesions in comparison to the placebo. However, those in the tazarotene group reported a significantly higher rate of adverse events in the form of burning, itching and stinging at the site of application. Plus, their skin is drier and experiences a higher rate of exfoliation. Reported side effects are mild, and the clinical trial did not report any treatment cessation due to adverse effects.

This study has shown that tazarotene lotion is an effective and well-tolerated treatment. However, the study did not report any other trials that compare the efficacy between the different medications in the retinoid class (Tretinoin, Trifarotene, etc.) or other treatment for acne vulgaris such as benzoyl peroxide.
